Washington, DC — The New Tolerance Campaign (NTC) today unveiled its latest initiative, calling on its grassroots network of 36,000 supporters in all 50 states to send a message supporting a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in China.

The announcement occurs as the Summer Olympics officially begin today in Tokyo, Japan — but tonight’s opening ceremonies take place under a dark cloud: Next year’s Winter Olympics is slated for China, where gross human rights abuses abound, including ethnic cleansing of minority Muslims and suffocating democracy in Hong Kong.

“The International Olympic Committee claims to have a ‘Human Rights Strategy,’ but has been silent on China’s violently oppressive regime and its ongoing genocide against its own people. Absent IOC action, the United States needs to take the lead,” New Tolerance Campaign President Gregory T. Angelo stated. “Politicians on both sides of the aisle have indicated that they support a diplomatic boycott — one that would send a message to China without penalizing American athletes. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken has said that he will be making a decision on this issue ‘in weeks to come,’ meaning the time for Americans to lend their voices to this cause is now, and the NTC campaign announced today gives them that vehicle.”

A diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in China would preclude U.S. political leaders and diplomats from attending as spectators while still allowing American athletes to compete in the games.

NTC’s petition calling for a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Olympics will be delivered to the U.S. State Department in the coming weeks.
